Ingredients

  • 1 section lotus root
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 5 tablespoons Heinz tomato sauce
  • 4 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon white sesame seeds
  • Enough cooking oil to fill a wok halfway (for deep-frying the lotus root)

Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare all the ingredients.

    Step 1
  2. 2

The lotus root I bought was quite large, so I only used half. Slice the lotus root, rinse it in clean water to wash off the starch, then remove and drain well.

    Step 2
  3. 3

Add the cornstarch and toss well so that each slice of lotus root is evenly coated.

    Step 3
  4. 4

Next, make a versatile sweet-and-sour sauce using the 5-4-3-2-1 ratio: add 5 tablespoons Heinz tomato sauce, 4 tablespoons white vinegar, 3 tablespoons white sugar, and 2 tablespoons water to a bowl, then stir well and set aside. The Heinz tomato sauce is described as fat-free and additive-free, with a balanced sweet-and-sour taste, suitable for both Chinese and Western dishes, and packaged in a squeeze bottle that is convenient to use without waste.

    Step 4
  5. 5

Pour enough cooking oil into the wok or pan. Once the oil is hot, add the lotus root slices. Do not stir right away; let them set first, then stir. Fry until lightly golden, then remove.

    Step 5
  6. 6

Leave a little oil in the pan, pour in the prepared sweet-and-sour sauce, and cook until the sauce thickens.

    Step 6
  7. 7

Add the fried lotus root slices and white sesame seeds, then quickly stir-fry evenly. Remove from the pan and serve.

    Step 7
  8. 8

The sweet-and-sour lotus root slices coated in the sauce have a rich savory-sweet sauce flavor and a crisp, refreshing texture.

    Step 8
